Gullah Geechee Festival Comes to Atlantic Beach

Diamond Dynasty Productions and The Atlantic Beach South Carolina Gullah Geechee Organization present The Historical Atlantic Beach Gullah Geechee Cultural and Nature Festival from June 23 to 25, 2023, on the streets of Atlantic Beach, South Carolina. This new event celebrates the history of the region and the culture of the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of West and Central Africans who were enslaved and brought to the lower Atlantic states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida to work on the coastal rice, Sea Island cotton and indigo plantations.

Planned activities for the free festival include a parade of fashion from throughout Atlantic Beach history as well as a full lineup of speakers, authors, storytellers, dance performances, music, arts and crafts, and evening receptions. The event highlights and celebrates the historical relevance, resilience, self-sufficiency and tenacity of the Gullah Geechee culture. Organizers say this festival is the first of its kind in 20-plus years and that they hope to make it an annual tradition in Atlantic Beach.

Admission is free and open to all. For more information including a full schedule of events and their corresponding locations, visit AtlanticBeachSCGullahGeechee.org.
